Default Goodyear Wrangler MT/R

Anyone running these tires? How do they compare to the KM2's and Mickey Thompson MTZ?

Also, the 305/70R-17 are 34"'s. Isn't this the best way to solve the 33 vs 35 debate

I ran MT/Rs on my TJ. They were great tires for the first 10K miles or so, then wore quickly from there until they were deafening. Even rotating every 3K miles wouldn't give me even wear. I would only get them for something that wasn't a daily driver.

These are 3 of the tires that I am also considering. I have heard that the KM2s are great tires, but would like information on the MTs.

I found Goodyear MT/R's are more expensive than the Toyo MT's. I looked at them as they are 34's but I have heard they have poor wear compared to other MT's on the market and are really loud on the highway.

I am looking at 295/70R17 Cooper STT's, Toyo M/T's and even considering the 315/70R17's MT MTZ's which are 34.4" overall diameter. I would love to get the 35's but...with 3:73 gears....I don't really want to regear right now.

Are the Toyo's a lot heavier than the other tires mentioned? And, if so will this make a difference on the road?

I've been running these in a 37x12.50x17 for about 1500 miles. No complaints so far.

They weren't my 1st choice, but I got an awesome deal on them used. Either the KM2's or Cooper STT's will probably be my next tire.

MT/Rs are good performers, but IMO wear too fast if you're going to be doing any significant highway miles.

x2. I ran them on my '05 TJ for about 20k miles. They were fine for the first 8-10k, then they become loud and very difficult to balance properly. Great tires for off-road with extremely stiff sidewalls and excellent grip, but not good for highway or city driving. If I had an exclusive off-road rig, I would put them on that, but not for my daily driver. I prefer the BFG muds on my JK Rubi for a good all-around tire. 2k miles and I've been very happy with the BFGs.

I've heard great things on this forum about the Toyo M/Ts, but have never run them.

Good luck.

I ran 33" MTRs for 42K on my TJ. I was more than pleased with them. I rotated every 6K and they stayed perfectly balanced. They did get cupped at about 38K or so and got pretty loud. I think 36K is about what you can expect with any tire with an aggressive pattern that is used how we/I do. The sidewalls were very tough and it was an excellent all around tire.I would say that the profile of the contact makes them more stable than the BFG MTs I replaced them with. The BFGs are rounded and drift a little more and are a little less stable in corners.

I do not like the BFG MTs at all. The do wear fast and are very prone to cupping and noise. The TJ had about 15K before you could hear those. I traded them for Krawlers and the truck got totaled about 2K later. My 07 rubi already makes noise from them at 8K or so (they've been rotated twice). I don't mind the noise so much but they just aren't a good offroad tire. They hold mud very bad, worse than the MTR. I can't really say anything good about them. I hope the KM2s are better.
