Default Grinding my calipers this weekend. First time using an angle grinder!

My new Crager soft 8's with 4'' of backspacing are rubbing with about 1/8th an inch of metal being shaved off the wheel at upper part of the caliper (near the edge of the 8 holes). I picked up an angle grinder yesterday and figure shaving my calipers would be safer then running 1/4'' spacers.

Any advice for a noob at grinding calipers? 1/8th of metal won't damage the integrity of the caliper right?

1/8" is quite a bit. And now you have a wheel with 1/8" groove in it. Not good.

Pics of both would be helpful to this thread.

Discount Tire still has the wheel so 1/8th is just a estimate. The rubbing was on the backside of the 8 holes. There is a recessed area where the holes are stamped out and it rubbed on that ridge. It's not a constant groove on the wheel.

My calipers must be huge because these are Crager soft 8's with 4'' of backspacing.

Good idea in the paint. I'll have to pick some up for the back of my wheels, and the calipers.

Practice safe grinding, wear protection.

Srsly...if you've never used one before, those wheels WILL explode. If you get a nick or crack in it, throw it away and get a new one.

I'm just grinding, not drilling into it.

wear protection!

The grinding is simple.. takes more time to pull the tire off and reinstall it.. no problems with my calipers after almost 2 years

I just used a flat file but the interference was only 1/32" or so (parting line on the casting).

Don't get carried away with the grinder either, keep it moving so you dont' gouge the calipers. Good luck!
