Default Hardtop Panel Storage Idea

I have an idea for an alternative to the Lange Originals Hardtop Panel Storage System. Instead of paying $60.00 plus shipping for 4 pieces of foam and 2 straps, I'm thinking of using a swim noodle ($2 each) cut like pipe insulation to line the bottom edge of the panel that contacts the jeep floor and making some kind of simple separator piece to go in between the two panels. For straps, it seems like 2 appropriately sized ratchet straps would work. You could also line the top edge like the bottom edge with the noodle. This would protect the top edge from pressure put on it by tightening the straps. What do ya'll think?

Here's the Lange Originals product I'm talking about:

Try it! Your set up is cost effective and one of the funs of having a Jeep is trying new things with it, even if they are minor things. I say what do you have to lose? The idea seems reasonable and the materials are practical.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll try it tonight. I'll post pics and thoughts here when it's done.

No problem. If you go through with this and the final product works out, try to take a pick and update this thread as I'm sure others with a hardtop wouldn't mind the inspiration.

It was a success. Bought the noodles at a nearby sporting goods store for $1.65 each x 4, but only used 3. Four 6 foot straps at Autozone were $15.99, but I had a credit at the store and only used two of the straps. The only modifications to my original plan were that I turned the panels so that the inside seam was on the bottom b/c the noodles were easier to put on that edge. Also, I did the straps in a crisscross b/c it held the panels better down and toward the front of the Jeep. I put a piece of noodle folded like an "A" in between the panels to keep them separated. I'm really happy with the results and I only spent a few dollars.

Good idea! I think I may try and build an add-a-trunk system and build some brackets under it that will hold my panels. If I ever get around to doing it I'll post up...

How are you keeping the panels stored in the jeep? Do you tie them down to the floor?

I hook the ends of the straps through the headrest brackets and criss-cross over and down to the metal tie-down loops located either side of the floor in the jeep's rear cargo area.
