Default Hella light install question...

The instructions show the switch being wired into the bright lights. Can they be wired direct? If yes, how?

Wouldn't you connect the high side directly to the battery(thru a fuse of course) instead of a switched 12v power source(aka brights)?
That's what I did with my KC Slimlites.

Yep, they can be wired directly -- you could just connect the lead you would be connecting to the High Beams directly to the positive terminal of the battery although I suggest you put a fuse in there close to the battery if you are going to do that. Alternatively, you could connect that same lead to any accessory positive lead (like the cig lighter for example) and power it that way so long as you have a big enough fuse on the line.

The wiring diagram has .....

-one wire from the relay to the battery
-one wire from relay to the lights
-one from relay to ground
-one from relay to switch

Then the switch has....

-one wire from switch to relay
-one wire from switch to high beam

You don't need a big fuse in the line to power the switch that controls the relay. That's low current. The big fuse is needed in the line from the battery to the relay. The big current flows from the battery to the relay to the lights.

I just installed Hella 500's. I didn't even use the switch. I tapped into the high beam lead to trigger the relay. That way, the Hellas are only on when my high beams are on. You can't accidently bump the switch and walk away with the Hellas on.

I want to do the wiring the same way for my Hella's, tapping into the high beam lead, but don't know how or where to do this. When I look at the engine bay, I see hundreds of wires and yards of wiring looms and am afraid I'd hate to cut into the wrong one!! A few details of how you found the lead, what color the wire is, where you spliced in, etc., would be very much appreciated, and if it's not too much to ask, a picture or two would be terrific!

Connect the lead that is supposed to go from the High Beam to the switch to the positive lead on the back of your cig lighter. If you have the smoker's group on your rig (two power outlets in the dash) I believe the one on the left is keyed (only on when the power is switched on with the key) and the one on the right is always on. Connect to the one that provides the functionality you want (Aux lights can only be on when the the key is on vs. cannot be on when the key is off).
