You may be talking about the or-fab set up?

smittybuilt has something like this to, it attaches to your tailgate and then to your rear tire carrier. so you only have to open one and not bolth.

I could be wrong, but I think the OR-Fab set-up (even WITHOUT the Jerry can carrier) still opens separately from the tailgate. Here's a link where you can check out some pix and get a really good close-up of what appears to be a locking hinge. (It's the last pic on the right)

I had debated for a VERY long time on whether or not to get the one with or without the Jerry can carrier, but since my gas mileage is bad, and will be even worse after a 4" lift and 35's, I opted for the one WITH the Jerry can carrier. Good luck!

The part i am talking about looked like a tie-rod, about 7 or 8 inches long that came with a bracket to bolt 1 end to the stock tail gate of the jk and a bracket to bolt the other end to the sparetire swingaway. it was adjustable. it makes the spare tire swing with the tailgate.

Expedition One. CHeck it out. They are a sponsoring manufacturer and thier Trail Series bumper/tire carries swings with the rear gate.

I know that Rugged Ridge has come out with a linkage to connect their XHD bumper to the tailgage. Check out this thread:
