Default Help me pick a gear ratio!

I have a 2009 Unlimited X (4 door) with a 6-speed. It has the 3.21 gears and currently has 315/70/17 tires. I already have an AEV Procal. Every once in a while I will be towing a double jetski trailer with it. The majority of the use will be highway use. I have about decided to get 4.88 gears. Here is what I think I need for an install, am I missing anything?

- 2 sets of Gears
- 2 install kits
- Dana 30 carrier to run the 4.88's
- Gear oil (what brand and weight is recommended and how much will I need?)

Thanks!

cough*4dr-getthe5.13's*cough....what?

um. maybe new bearings. that's up to you.

75W90 gear oil is what is recommended. 3 quarts is all you need. 2 in the rear for the d44 and 1 in the front w/ the d30.

I have a 2 door X 6 speed with 35" tires and I'm running 4.88's. I think this ratio is perfect for my application. You will need 4 qts of gear oil (1.05 qts front/2.35 qts rear). I'm running synthetic 75W140 (Royal Purple) but any 75W90 gear oil can be used also. I'd get the JK Dana 30 carrier with the spider gears already installed if you don't plan on adding a front locker.

Default 4.88's on dana 30 simple

why break your shit all the time just go with 4.88's or find a dana 44 front axle which in costs of gears and all is same thing anyway and go with 4.10 for a little while or upgrade right away to 5.13

Your on the right track. A suggestion....a new carrier to install your 4.88's will run you about 70 bucks, if you've got a little extra cash, you could consider upgrading your open diff to a LSD for added traction like the Detroit Truetrac for like $370, just a suggestion, you'll be in there anyways and can gain some added traction with a great unit like that....or put up a wanted add on this forum for a d30 open diff take out that will fit 3.73 and up ratios, someone with an X or Sahara that had 3.73 or 4.10's that upgraded and put a locker in or something??? Could get one fairly cheap I'd imagine....Just some suggestions. Good luck

That's what I read in the owner's manual, but I also read a write-up on here that said 3.

I just did this about 3 weeks ago and the D44 overfilled right before the 2 qts was empty. Also, the D30 overfilled right before I got 1 qt in it. FYI, I did completely drain both.

I guess if you don't trust that, you can always save the extra bottle for the next go around.

If you have stock differential covers, just fill until the gear oil starts running out the fill hole and then quickly put in the plug. Easy!
