Default HELP..A Roaring Sound with 4.88s ??

So, I just picked up my Jeep from the shop. As I'm driving home with my 4.88s, I hear a roaring noise coming from the rear gear. VERY noticable. Even my 9 year old was questioning the noise. Also, I did notice a SLIGHT whine while letting off the gas but that was not a big issue. You had to be listening for it. The issue was the Roaring upon acceleration. In sixth gear only.

at 40mph = almost undectable
at 50mph = Listen.....What's that??
at 60mph = Oh Yeah, What the heck is that??

As I'm going 60mph, I could let off the gas and the noise dampens. It continues to dampen while I begin slowing down. The moment I hit the gas to accelerate, There it is back again.

I'm assuming this is the bearings. The shop has already closed now but does anyone have some knowledge on what's going on? I hear mixed opinions about the so called "break in period." HELP PLEASE.....

Default Gear Noise...

Sounds like you have a bad setup on the gears.

Maybe not enough backlash.

If so the rear end could lock up.

I think you should probably have the Jeep towed back to the shop
to prevent further damage possibilities or an accident.

Don't hesitate to take it back. They shouldn't make any noise at all.

Default Really, dont drive it??

Well, the funny thing about it is that I took it out for a second trip after I got home and it cooled down. It still made the roaring sound but this time not as loud. The second trip seemed to be a better ride but still some roaring no whine.

So, driving this is a bad idea??

are they broke in? company's should tell you what they reccomend for break in,, ie.. drive 10 to 15 miles let cool down, stay under certain speed, do not toe or place heavy load on gears until they reach certain mileage etc..ask the shop what the break in is...and when yo should change the oil after break in...my last gear set was no more than 25 miles, let cool, do this for first 150, no heavy pulling or torque until i think around 500, and change oil around 500...can't remember just ask the guys who did the install.....

TAKE IT BACK ASAP......trust me my gears whined since I got them done and now 1800mi later I have to get them replaced. The shop I had mine done just couldnt do gears and shouldnt be doing gears, I wont be taking it back there. Yours are making more noise then a whine is really bad, makes you wonder if they even test drove it after they were done. I wouldnt drive it either. Tow it flatbed only. Call the shop in morningand tell them to send a tow on their dime.

pic of my gears after 1800mi....you can see the pinion gear chipping apart

Take it back, flatbed is the best way, gears should make NO noise, and I have done gears before and no real break-in needed, after a 10 mile test drive and recheck all should be good. ANY noise is BAD with gears.. A shop I delt with did one axle up for a guy, He got 12 miles away and asked about a noise,, they had overtightened his pinion.. We looked under and it was smoking hot. needless to say, the axle had to be done over again..
Good luck,,
