turned out nice

not sure of the corners for my own tastes but it still looks good. I like the swingaway tied to the tailgate idea (as long as it isnt a rigid fit)

Thanks, all of the weight is on the bumper. When the gate is open I can push down on th tire and it flexes free of the gate due to the use of the Heims/rod ends. When closed the pin located at the bottom of the carrier holds all of the weight. The Jeep body is free to flex from the bumper/carrier.
I think it looks better in person then in a picture.

I just meant i am leaning more towards the stubby look in the rear.

I have a full width PJ & I love it... but I was wondering if i shouldnt have gone with a stubby instead (personal pref is all)... ...until a guy at work ran into it last week. My PJ saved my sheetmetal and just has some red scrapes on it, had it been a stubby i might have had to buy new corner guards to cover up squashed steel. The red will come off easy enough, and the scratches will get rattlecanned black again.

I still think i like stubbies better though

It is amazing how these "little" projects end up taking up so much time. Lost track of the hours I put into this, I would quess over 40 maybe 50 hours . Most of it was figuring out problems along the way.

I prefer the stubby look also. I wanted full width for not only street and trail damage, but also for stone chip protection on the road. I have a lifted Chevy with stone chips all over the sheetmetal. Trying to prevent this on the JK. Mud tires like to throw the big rocks

Default Update, Fine tuning complete.....maybe

Just replied to a bumper build thread so thought I would post it here also.
Also check out my new side steps in the last picture.

The Swing out carrier that works with the stock gate adds a lot of work. I spent a lot of trime trying to get all of the rattles out but it was worth the effort.

I no longer use a rubber hose on my support pin, now I use a nylon block. Also added a Polyurathane bumper on the top of the carrier to help. I found that the heims make noise unless they are always under tension, the poly bumper provides this.

Here is my support pin. I have zero weight on the gate due to this design.

Here is the gate fully closed. Note the black poly bump stop contacting the SS plate on the gate. This keeps the Heims under tension.

half way open

All the way open

One more picture
