Default How Much Do I Fill With A Aftermarket Diff Cover?

I've always heard just below the fill hole, but my aftermarket cover's fill hole is much higher than the stock one. Doesn't over-filling cause problems?

Yes, overfilling causes problems the least of which is blowing excess out the vents. Check with the cover manufacturer to see the rec fill for their cover. They are all different.

If I'm not mistaken, the fluid should fill the diff about half way. I took a zip tie, bent it at an almost 90 degree angle and used it as a dipstick.

I was just going to start a new thread with the same topic...

I have a D60, a Pro Rock D60 from Dynatrac,e their are two fill holes, one in the usual place, but a second one way up top

I called Dynatrac and maybe the guy was having a really bad day but he was all pissy like I should have already known all the fine details...well the axle didn't come with any documentation, let alone a manual.

All I got out of him was that it takes 3 1/2 quarts

thats it!

So somewhere online I read that you take the 3 1/2 quarts and poured it ALL into the top hole and that would fill both reservoirs

Can someone please share their knowledge on this

Hey Matthew, Iam running the Dynatrac diff covers so you have your fill plug up higher and there is a smaller plug be low.
If you look that smaller plug is just about level with bottom of axle tube. You want your oil level just a tad above that...Don't know amount of gear oil for those 60's
But if you fill to that level you should be good....

The quantity number doesn't matter.
What's important is the oil level is high enough to get out to the axle bearings in the rear axle, and high enough to lube the carrier bearings in the front axle.
To meet these requirements, the oil must be a little above the bottom of the inside of the axle tube.

For an after market cover you will have to use a small dip stick, and use it to ensure the oil level is at the correct level.

Thank you for the input

just some more info, it's a rear D60 if that matters...

It is a Dynatrac axle assembly with a dynatrac diff cover

the thing is that if you fill it the conventional way you end up with too much oil and it starts coming out through the seals

i was told that there is a lower and upper reservoir and you should fill them separately

its frustrating not having a factory manual with just the basic info, beyond "THREE AND A HALF QUARTS"

The OP has a Dana 44.
I don't know anything about the Dana 60.

This was posted on a forum and is the method I used to get it right. Makes complete sense. Basically gets you to the stock level (easier if you have an ARB diff cover with the dip stick).
