As I recall from my personal & tire shop employment experience the A/T KO's were a newer design in the mid 90's with a lip @ the bead to help from popping off rim when aired down.

It's called a rim-saver bead. "...helps to protect your rim edge from damage in the rocks. It also helps keep rocks and twigs from between the tire and rim, and it reduces the pinch shock on the sidewall when you hit a rock while aired down for the trail."
