Default How to tell where rub noise sound is coming from?

Is there a way to exactly tell where a new rub sound is coming from? It may sound easy and I can come up with a good guess, but was wanting to exactly identify the problem rather than spending money on logical guesses.

New 35”s were just added and the 2017 Jeep Rubicon Recon was supposed to be able to handle them without any lift needed, but there is a new rub sound when going over the speed bumps in the subdivision unless we crawl really, super slow over them. There seems to be no problem with articulation making left and right turns on the driving in the road.

Thanks in advance, Karen

HI .. Articulation is the when 1 tire is lifted much higher over an obstacle and not the other side.. not when turning.. as you describe in your subdivision you might have a partner walk along or stand by the speed bump watching your Jeep and they should see if a tire is hitting the fender or the pinch weld.. 35s w/o a Lift -- IMO guaranteed to rub something somewhere. here is a probable area and based on your post it was probably not performed.. BTW.. I cut mine when we put 35s on with an AEV 2.5" Dual Sport lift.. There are multiple threads on JKF ,, thread search bar is at the top right..

I've always had luck seeing fresh rub marks on the plastics or wherever it may be touching. Sometimes that means hitting a little dirt so that you can clearly see what's touching where.

As far as telling exactly where it's coming from- you've got it just above me- have someone watch from a safe distance or try to mount a camera in there to record where you think it may be making the noise. You may be able to just pull the tires off and see what's got fresh rubs on it.

Thanks for the awesome suggestion. We will do that. We had been told the Rubicon Recon came with a factory lift over the usual Rubicon and could handle the 35s with no problem. Wrong I guess. Now to figure out the exact where and best course of action to correct the issue.

We do not really want to change things much if we can with the rabbits hole one gets into with lifts and all, but one step at a time. Thanks
