Default HP Claims: Computer Chips

Granted I am used to driving V8 vehicles, the lack of power in the JK has been a bit discouraging. I would like to get more power, but with exhaust systems they tend to get loud, intake systems can make water get in easy (hydrolocking?), and chips seem to offer the world in power via computer.

I purchased the Jet chip a few days after getting my JK. 25HP+ increase and a dyno sheet to show it! Rough calculation, thats about 12.5% power increase and should be noticable. When I got it, the packaging seemed to indicate it was a standard mopar 3.8L chip and nothing specific to the JK. After it was installed, I honestly could not tell much difference in the power. My gas mileage did get about .5 MPG better (my calculation not from display).

When in Colorado, we went up the Eisenhower Pass from the west. Having a 6-speed transmission, I was floored in 4th gear to try and hold 65 MPH and needed 3rd gear when when I dropped to 60 MPH.

What is the story on these chips? They claim a high horsepower return for low money, but just not even close. Some better then others? Other ways to get horsepower?

Ive never been a fan of Jet Chips. Ive heard good things on the UNICHIP from people who actually have one, not what the manufacturer says. If you want to add more HP - Hesco makes a supercharger!

If you type in JK Superchargers in Google there is another supercharger out ther as well. Said it would be shipping in Feb 2007, but delayed to June and I believe requires a 1" body lift or modification of the hood to make room.

Looking at the Hesco kit, for the money doesn't look like getting much! Does anyone know of a V8 conversion kit? I think AEV is trying to make one commercial this fall, but didn't have the best of luck with them ordering parts in the past (big time delays).

For $4,500 (50% Gain)- your 3.8L will be making 300HP and 360 ft/lbs. and you can add the UNICHIP with them and see a (62% Gain) - around 325 HP and 380 ft/lbs. Burnsville Off road sells hemi conversions but even if you installed the motor/tranny yourself you probably would be spending twice as much....for a 330 hp and 375 ft/lbs Hemi. Obviously there is no replacement for displacement, but I think the supercharger is a pretty good deal.......but hell if you have the $$, get Burnsville to swap a 6.1 Hemi in your JK!
