Default "Hummer" Snorkel on JK?

Hi All,

Tripped across this on another forum:

Has anyone done this or seen this on a JK? I like the low profile of it, and it looks like it should be a fairly simple mod (I am at work, so have not looked under the hood to see if that is true).

My first thought exactly.

Well yes, but it's also farther back. When you enter water at slow to moderate speed you form a wake in the front of the jeep. Sometimes in deep water the wake can come up too high, sometimes over your hood, and thats when you can risk hydrolocking. Having the intake all the way in back would make it less likely to hydrolock in these situations where your trying to cross deep water carefully, which is actually quite common. I take it this guy doesn't do any serious boggin' but wanted a little added protection. I agree it's not as good as a roof line snorkel but I'm sure it helps. Plus I bet it draws some serious cold air.

It seems as though you could just take the filter off and add a piece of pipe 12" long or whatever and be fine.

I read the build up on that a while back, I think it was on jeep 4x4 or something. He drives around town like that and when he offroads he has an extender piece that he puts on that raises the snorkel close or level with the windshield, kinda like a H1 can do.

Why not keep it extended over the windshield all the time? It makes no sense to keep changing it.

My neighbor was talking about this the other day. I don't think there's enough room under our hood to plumb something like this, but I like the idea. As the snorkel is the closest thing there is for a true CAI on our JK's I wouldn't mind figuring out something a bit less than the large rain gutters currently available. My thoughts were going to something more like the intakes on the J8's.

umm what if that wake comes up to the snorkel? it seems like 100% waste to me unless you do add an extender when you go wheeling

thats no where near 18" higher on a JK, the stock intake is just below the top of the hood
