"Step drill bit is the way to go. Using a regular bit is bad news"
I used a pair of "cowboys", vice grips with the wide mouth, to keep it safe for a regular high-speed drill bit.
If I didn't have them though, I would have gone the step-bit route.

I wish I thought of the step drill it turned out good but was a pain to get lined up just right. Has any one used a sealant to help prevent rusting behind their sliders?

I've asked a couple manufacturers and they both say not to seal. It essentially traps moisture where you want it to breathe.
