jk tire and rim size
Hey so I'm pondering the to go with a set of new rims and tires. As of of right now no lift is planned. I know on a 17x9 I've researched I can go 285/70/17 but how big can I get away with on a 18x9 and again no lift or rub? Thoughts?

The same size? 
17 vs 18 will affect how much sidewall there is between the rim and the outside of the tire, not the height or width of the tire itself.

You'll need 4.5" back spacing on the wheels or wheel spacers so they won't rub. Welcome to the forum.

Cool beans! And thank you. I've been here but just quiet lol. So if I did nitto terra grapplers 285/75/18 and 4.5 back spacer there shouldn't be any rubbing? Or would you suggest the 17". Thanks again. Greatly appreciate it as there are so many options.

Either will work fine. Tires for 17's will generally be a bit cheaper, and depending on specific tire size, should have a better selection. And some people like the look of a slightly bigger rim. Totally up to you.
If you are looking at a spacer kit, any of them will work fine. A spacer is pretty much a spacer, so just compare any added components that come in the kits. If you are looking at coils, do some checking to find the actual lift height people are getting to make sure you aren't going taller than you want.

I'm cool doing a 17x9 with a 285/70/17. The difference from 75 to 70 shouldn't be that noticeable . I just don't want to run into rubbing or complications. Thanks again for the advice.

As was said earlier as long as you have 4.5 in back spacing which will bring the tire out from the breaks you will be fine. A friend has a JKU 2014 with 315/70r17 Nitto's and no lift. The Nitto tires are very wide I believe 13"s so I wouldn't go off roading with out a 2" lift.
