Question JKS Front Upper Install Question...

What's up forum? Ok so I have 3" lift and 33" tires. My JKS front uppers just came in today. I started reading the instructions and holy cow is all of this really necessary? I have everything under the sun I would need alignment machine, Jacks, Jack stands. Thanks to the Auto Care Center here on lovely Fort Polk. But shit I dont want this to take all damn day. And then once their installed how do I go about making sure they are the right length? Take it off the machine jack it up and all that hoopla? This could take 3+ attempts to get it right!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Would it be easier to put it on a lift and work with it this way?

What is your 'actual' lift height? You can ask what others with that height what they set the length to, which will get you in the ballpark. If nobody answers, there may be a section with some recommended lengths on Tera's website. As a last resort, start them 1/8"-1"4" shorter than the stock arms.

For the install, it really isn't difficult, or time consuming, other than needing to cut that one bolt off due to the placement of the exhaust.

And this is a good resource:

But note that the caster angles given are from using an angle finder, and will not match up with the numbers from an alignment rack. (the angle finder measurements will likely be 1-2deg higher than the rack)

Question

So really I can do the install with the vehicle on the ground if im doing the cut the bolt method? Then use the jack to realign the bolt holes. Anyone know exactly what the replacement bolt is?

You could check the write-ups area also. (there is an index stickied to the top). Any of them with adj arms will work, doesn't have to be jks arms.

And yes, since the majority of people don't have lifts in their garages and install full lifts just fine, you can do this yourself on the ground. Just think safety. One side at a time unless you have jacks and stands under everything. You don't want that axle flopping over and dropping the front end on you.

And for the 'method', it is either cut the bolt, or remove the exhaust. Don't think I have seen anyone posting that they removed the exhaust, but if that seems easier to you, go for it.

What I mean is... Can I remove the C-Arm without actually raising anything off the ground, Just make sure everything is supported so nothing shifts on me. Otherwise just get under there and unbolt the thing.

The instructions say loosen the passenger side engine mount and proceed to jacking the motor up with a second jack until you can get the bolt out. Sounds like more of a pain than going to Lowe's and getting a new bolt. See they charge by the hour for a bay to work on the Jeep. If anyone knows the replacement bolt it would make things simpler and cheaper.

Thanks for help.

Ahhh, gotcha. I hadn't actually read those instructions before. Those are for if you want to get a wrench up there and unbolt it. Sounds like a lot more work than just taking a sawzall or grinder to it...

Lightbulb I get it now!

So now its starting to make sense! So I'll do the install tomorrow and post the size of the replacement bolt. Should I also buy a nut or the old one should work fine?

you can get away with just getting a new 10mm grade 10.9 bolt but, if you want, you can use a 1/2" grade 8 bolt, washers and nut instead too. if you go this route, you will need to drill out the inner mounting hole using a 1/2" drill bit.
