Default kayak on soft top

I am going to get a kayak. A tandem sit on top. I have a 4 door with soft top. I found a bunch of threads on roof mounting when the top is down but I want to with the top up. I don't want to spend a lot and install a roof rack. I was thinking of just using the foam things and straps to strap it to the roll bar by going in through the top of the doors. Has anyone done this? Would it damage the soft top?

Probably. I wouldn't do it. If you're going to get a Kayak I would get all necessary transportation and safety equipment needed to use it.

Long time kayaker white water and now fishing, I went through the same issues. Plan on keeping my jeep for a long time so this was my solution. I can carry kayaks and lot of other stuff. It used to be sold by Rack and Roll but they were bought by Yakima so now it is under thier catalog and also a bit more expensive.

A guy in my boyfriend's kayaking group uses foam blocks and tie downs for his kayak on his TJ. It's pretty beat up, so keeping it nice wasn't a priority. I believe he also ties it to the hood point and the back bumper too.

Sorry I don't have the link, but one guy on here made a "front rack" out of steel square tube that bolts to the front hinge plate.

He had what looked like 1" tube running vertical, then a 3/4" round pipe running across.

Do that, then pick up a bed extender from Harbor freight & you should be good to go.

It will wear on the fabric of the top.
For 3-4 hundred get a rack.

Default double receiver rack

on my truck I put a receiver on the front and used 2 of the goal posts... I made them myself... but I think the bed extender from harbor freight is cheaper than the material... all total cheaper than a yakima rack and totally removable.
