Labor Rate For Changing Ring & Pinion?
I need to have my rear ring & pinion replaced and got an estimate just on the labor only from a local mechanic he said the labor guide he uses recommends 8-10hrs for just the rear!
Is that the going rate and if so what labor guide is he talking about?

I have done R&P's in my driveway without all the proper tools to make it faster in 3-4 hours depending on the axle type. 8-10 hours is laughable. The front will be long, since it takes longer to get the axle shafts out. Although the offroad shops here chearge less if you pull the front shafts yourself before going in.
Don't let this guy rip you off.
Do some more shopping around, check with all of the drivetrain shops and 4wheel drive shops in your area. Or if there is a local 4x4 club, ask who they go to.
The shop I used did 'both' axles in 2 hours 15 minutes, but as the previous posters stated, expect 3-4.

I can have the ring and pinion out of a Jeep in about 30 minutes. Maybe less if I'm feelin frosty. Setting up new gears requires some specialty tools and a little more time than just ripping something apart, but 8-10 hours is ridiculous. I just did it for 250 an axle when I was still whorin myself out.
