Should I take mine in just to get the problem documented? Would the dealer replace the head without the CEL coming on?

Sometimes I think that my Jeep having the 3.8 engine might not be a bad thing.

No probably not, they need to have documented a DTC, it's usually a P0302,PO304 or P0306. The code will be in a pending status before the CEL while come on for sometime. Mine pended for 500 miles that I know of. I have yet to had have to RR a head because of rattling, it drives fine and maybe alittle MPG drop off. I've read people say the lifters/followers are rattling or rocker arms. But the truth is the lifter/followers and rocker arms are all transferred to the new head. And also the cams.

Every make has its problems when designing something new, I'd wouldn't worry much about it, is taking care of people with this head issue. Other than this issue I don't see any other mechanical issues with the Pentastar.

Since you took so many engines apart, could you please shed some light on the question of what is the real head number and where is it located? There are so many numbers flying around, so its kinda hard to tell, how do I recognize a new head from the old one...

Btw, what number is the latest-latest head design?

There's a number w/scan symbol on the head right where the exhaust flange bolts up, it'll be on the top when in the car. Between valve cover and exhaust.
