Default License plate thefts

There have been a lot of license plate thefts in our area lately. From what I understand they use the plates on their vehicles, fill with gasoline, and drive off. The station clerk sees the plate number and reports it to the police.

Any ideas on how to secure the plates to try to avoid this?

I'd try some theft-resistant screws.
They aren't easy to get out with pliers, either.
Someplace like a locksmith or janitorial supply might have them. (Yup, janitorial supply. Very common for bathroom stalls.)

Of course, if I was truly free to protect my property, I'd wire about 20,000 volts to the plate. The cops wouldn't have to go far to find the perp. He would be the one on the ground that smelled like bacon.

Hex or Torx cap screw will get it done along with some loctite. The amateurs will just move on to the next victim as they aren't going to be carrying a tool box.

First I've heard of this one. Apparently $3.00+ gas is the threshold for fuel thieves as well.

Gertie Hi! I would advise tamper- proof TORX screws, It would run you about $15.00 to buy the screws and the bit set to install them. A normal Torx screwdriver will not work on these. They can be obtained at any industrial- type bolt or fastener supplier. (for you rural types try google)

My personal favorite suggestion.
