Here is some interesting news about LINEX. After reading this, I was wondering if having my tailgate sprayed complete with LINEX would make it strong enough to run a 35" spare long-term on the factory carrier without damaging the spot welds or sheet metal. I like the factory carrier and want to make it work without causing problems or damage. Are there any welders or fabrication guys on here that can confirm if this will be a good reinforcement method?

When the LINE-X coating is sprayed onto the outside walls of a building it can withstand the force of the shockwave from blasts of varying sizes and stand-off distances (up to 1,100 pounds of explosives), as proved by tests conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers (USACE).
The U.S. Department of Defense selected the LINE-X blast mitigation coating application for the renovation of the Pentagon after 9/11. LINE-X has since been applied at dozens of vulnerable sites around the world including the Federal Building in downtown Manhattan; the Washington Naval Yard near Washington DC; and the British Ministry of Defense in London.
LINE-X is also used in military service in Iraq and Afghanistan as a protective coating for armored plates worn inside 50,000 ballistic vests. The coating has also been applied to armor plating around the machine gun mounts used on HMMWVs (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles).

 

I would think not.

 

I line-x my tube and rear tail gate. Then added a 35" tire and my spot welds have now given way and I have the tail gate rattle.

I wish I hadn't linexed the tail gate now with out welding in some reinforcement. To answer your original question it will not make it strong enough.

 

Did you line-x both sides and the edges of the tailgate or just one side?

The Line-X is not strong in the sense that it can strengthen metal. I watched some clips on the Line-X and it is durable, flexible, and stretches, which makes it ideal for the interior of buildings, as explosions do not destroy the walls.

a 35" on the stock carrier is not a good idea, plain and simple. It will rattle and damage for sure.

 

I would not mess with the Line_x as a way to strenghen the stock tire carrier. I would save my $$$ and buy a good aftermarket bumper that had one on it that would handle whatever size tire you want !.

 

All I get from that is that if you line-x the rear tailgate, it can stand up to 1100 pounds of explosives. The rest of the jeep, if not sprayed, will not.

 

There is no way to compare and explosion to a tire on the swing gate. The issue with an oversized tire is the constant vibrations that occur causing the welds to fail. The lining can not help with these stresses, but it can help with a one time large vibration like an explosion.

 

wen i whent to my local line-x shop there was a pepsi can sprayed entirely of this stuff. it was a dare to be able to crush the can with you hand and it was impossible.i think this stuff is extremely impressive but it strenght is not structural but more ... i dont know how to say it. you cant crush it. if you spray a tent with this stuff its gona be more resistent than wood. well i think. anyway i dont think that it can do anything bat do try it.
