Default Looking to go with 35"s.....

I'm looking to go with 35's and want to know if it is necessary to strengthen the axles? I will be putting on a 2.5 BB eventually and I won't be doing any rock crawling just trail riding. This is my DD 98% of the time. I have heard conflicting theories about sleeves, gussets, etc. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

At a minimum, definitely install gussets, even if you never go off road. All the rest depends on the type of wheeling you will be doing. For how you are planning on using yours, the gussets should be all you really need.

Gussets, sleeves, truss, hd mounts, etc, are all things that are good to have. But you will never know if you actually need any of them until after your housing/c's are bent.

There are people with new bone stock JK's that are reporting bent c's or posting pics of shattered housings. And there are people with lifts and big tires beating the tar out them that say they are fine. Read as much as you can and come to your own conclusion about what you need to do and how quickly you need to do it.

But go ahead and get a quote on the gussets...

I think theres pretty much a consenses that gussets are necessary even for mild wheeling. It really doesnt take much to bend one and they are not an easy fix. Other reinforcement isnt necessary for light wheeling but the longer you wheel the more technical stuff you will attempt and the stronger you will want to build.

Would this all apply if I was looking at 33's? What determines the need for all the extra protection? Weight, size, etc.

There isn't a magic number that says you will be safe if you stay on this side, but you will break if you go past it. Smaller and lighter is just less likely to contribute than bigger and heavier.

If you want 35's, get 35's. Add whatever strength upgrades you feel you need and can afford. Don't drive with a heavy foot. Pick your lines. Then deal with any problems if/when they arise.
