Low-cost / Free mods that should be done?
#3434
I guess i've been quiet on here for too long... so hi y'all, this is my first post!
(ok, that's one cherry popped)
so, while i'm too broke to get my wheels or suspension sorted, i have been messing around with a few cheapass mods, some borrowed and a couple new (i think).
oh yeah, and there is nothing wrong the pictures if you look hard, the steering wheel IS on the wrong side!
anyway, for now, the highlights;
firstly, the good ol' grill mod using drain guard. my only option was square rather than diamond, so a little different to most peoples (i'd have preferred diamond though!)
ok next has been my problem with what to do with the back window and sides from my Trektop NX when it is actually dry in the UK one thing you can count on here, is not trusting the weather one little bit, so they always come with me!
after a little hunting about, i found a perfect fit for the back window is a single bed duvet cover here in the UK. again, can go into detail if anyone cares, but it rolls up, along with the two side windows and fits perfectly in two of the green bags that you can see... you know those fold up chairs you get for fishing, sporting events, getting drunk in your back yard etc? yeah, well two of those. and bonus, they go perfectly over the rear headrests.
ok lastly, for now, i had an issue where i wanted my trunk space to be reasonably secure. i don't really care about small stuff, this is purely so no passing scumbag can lift my big bags out. the only remit i gave myself was that i also wanted to be able to store the 'shelf' when not in use. (i know as it is all they'd have to do is fold the seats down and go in from the front, it's the opertunist i'm thinking about, plus it means i can store another layer of items in the back, such as my tents without having to put them on top of each other and damaging the crap i carry.
anyway, here is the shelf in store mode (unpainted, at time of writing i have just glued the non-slip mat to the shelf, so didn't want to move it to take a fold down photo).
and lastly, my almost finished piccy. i have left the brackets poking upwards to be able to use for straps, and if you are still actually reading this and slightly attentive, you might notice that i ran out of the non slip matting!
lastly, just gotta say, i love this thread, have done for months!

If you really want triangles you could turn your squares 90 degrees before cutting them out and mounting.
I realize the sheet you have may not be wide enough in that formation to go across the entire grill. But you could always mount it in sections that are wide enough to go across one, two or maybe three grill openings at a time.
Depending on how you attach it on the inside of. the grill it may line up properly and not be noticeable from the outside.
Good luck on your future mods. Just like Xmas they are coming.

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you've been busy. Good job. The only comment I have for you is your grill mod.

i did try to turn them, but they were so badly made i only just got away with the straight option
i've got used to them now though, so kinda like them, but our hardware stores here are awful compared to you guys so choice is severely limited!

I might be odd man out but I like the look of the "square," looks more menacing I think!

Looks great Spannor. Love how you incorporated the store option with your shelf. Do you plan on making 2 side pieces eventually to cover the sides and fill it out?

The absolute best cheap mod IMHO is lining the tub of your jeep DIY. X lining is 100s of dollars but I did the interior of my 08 4 dr for about 60 bucks. I used herculiner from Napa. If you time it right there's even a mail in rebate for 20 bucks. There's enough in one container (not a gallon, it's a little bit smaller than that) to do 2.5 layers of the stuff. It's kind of hard to work with but certainly not impossible. It also takes some time to remove seats and sand and clean the tub but I did the entire project in a weekend.
I try to talk every Jeeper I meet into this mod. The carpet HAS to go!
I also did my wheels, turned out super.
I'll try to attach some pics
