Default Magnaflow & AEM Intake Thoughts...

1) AEM - I installed the AEM Brute Force on Saturday and like it for the most part. I noticed a little more power from it, mostly on hills. I do not like the whistling though. The growl that it produces does sound good though. The hardest part of the install was the damn sensor. The sensor grommet is why this install takes two hours!!! I kept pushing the rubber grommet into the pipe because the sensor fits so tightly. All in all, it seems to be a well made product. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow.

2) Magnaflow - I installed the Magnaflow catback exhaust tonight. The install directions are easy to follow. The rubber hangers on the exhaust brackets are the most difficult part to deal with. I would highly recommend getting different bolts for the supplied clamps though. This is where Magnaflow skimped on the quality. The directions suggest a torquing the clamp bolts to 65ft/lbs. I broke 2 bolts in a row before I reached 65ft/lbs and yes, I triple checked the torque setting on the wrench. I was able to replace the first two broken bolts with the ones from the stock exhaust. They held up to torque just fine. I had to leave the others at around 50ft/lbs until I can get replacement bolts tomorrow. Now, onto the sound. It has a nice sound and I will give it at least a week to see if it gets on my nerves. I noticed some additional power from this modification as well. I can now easily start up a modest incline in 2nd gear with no troble. So far I like it.

It seems that I have a little more power with both of these mods. The new sound of my Jeep vaguely reminds me of some punk kid's Honda though. As I said before, I am going to try it for a week or two and make the final decision on whether or not to keep it.

The whistle! anyone have a cure? I love the throttle response, and the sound at full pedal, but the whistle has to go. Can a larger or smaller diameter exhaust pipe get rid of the whistle.....?

well I too have a AEM intake and a magnaflow exaust (relocated muffler) and the power with both is better than stock. as for the whistle that everyone talks about I just don't understand. from the way you all are talking there is a loud, constant, annoying whistle, I don't have that problem. I do get a tiny "whistle" at a certain low RPM but it's hardly noticable. I honestly could'nt tell you at what RPM or moment I have herd the "whistle" on my jeep it's just not a issue ???

and also as for the sound well it's definatly allot deeper than a "hot rod honda".... those are my thoughts.....

the wistle has nothing to do with the exhaust pipe. It's on the intake pipe and TB itself. You'll get use to it after a while....

I mainly notice the whistle between 1500 and 2000 RPMs. I have noticed that it whistles only at certain times or when the engine is under load in a certain way. I am not sure how to describe it any better than that. I really do think that it has something to do with the way I drive. My shifting characteristics and how much I depress the accelerator.

As far as the Honda sound, I only meant that it vaguely reminded me of it. I know that it sounds different, it is just that in the last few years I have heard that Honda sound so much from those type of modified cars that a certain "sound recognition" has developed in my mind. I hope that explains it a little better. As I said, I am going to give it a week or two. So far my only experience with my new exhaust sound was an hour long drive after I installed the Magnaflow.

I do enjoy the extra power I have noticed so far. I have a few additional things that I am going to do this weekend. I am planning to switch over to Royal Purple engine oil and use their differential gear oil as well. I am installing an Aussie Locker (Dana 30 front) and changing out the diff covers as well. I am hoping that in addition to the extra power, I will also gain a little MPG from everything.

Now that you mentioned it I have not heard the whistle in some time.
When I first installed the AEM, the whistle bothered me. Searched the forums for a solution. The consensus seems to be turn up the radio.

Good to hear the opinions on the Magnaflow.
I have not decided yet if I will use the CoolTech solution for relocation or have my local exhaust shop bend up something.
Need to figure out how to protect the outlet. Kiind of depends on the Rear Bumper solution.

Had the same whistle on my TJ...went away after time....either that or I am deaf.

Anyone try using some Armor all on the inside of the grommet to slide the sensor in? Done it before on other installs and seems to work for me.

I have the AEM, and no whistle at all. I think that there's a bit of luck involved in all this.

Hey Shoal Creek. I think that the sound of my Magnaflow changed a bit over time. See if you notice any changes over the next month. DH, did you notice any changes?
