Default Making a snorkel ???'s

So i am wondering why snorkels follow to the windshield and then up? How come they dont just come out the hood in the front and then up? Is there a benifiet to this? Couldn't this be made pretty easily connecting a plastic tube and a whole in the hood? Any thoughts is appreciated.

Thanks

only reason for that is so that it doesn't get knocked off. and it would look stupid with a hole in the hood with pipe sticking out up front. would be easy to do. my buddy has a trailer queen mud bog rig with a v8 and he just put a big abs pipe over carb goig straight up. not much to hit in a mud bog
