Default manual transmission question

I under stand that the manual have a vent hole in the the bottom of the trans mission and that when crossing a stream it is important not to shift gears, because water will sucked into he clutch assembly?
Can the manual transmission vent hole be fitted with a tub and raised up to somewhere higher so this isn't a problem?

I always thought the problem was when shifting in deep water/mud it allowed debris in between the clutch and flywheel

It's not a vent you can extend with a tube. It's more a slot between the engine and bell housing. It's there to let clutch dust and any leaking oil escape from the bell housing. If you plug it and extend a tube to a higher point, all that stuff will fill the clutch with oil/debris anyway.

I always thought if I knew I was going somewhere that would put me at risk of getting into the chunky/soupy stuff, I'd get some gorilla tape to put over the slot. Then once I was done wheeling around, just pull the tape off.

I'm almost surprised that nobody offers a temporary plug. But then again, people probably wouldn't remember to pull the plug after wheeling.

Military Jeeps, M38, M38A1, had threaded plugs for bottom of bell housing , just for that reason. Reminder on dash,
" Remove Bellhousing Plug After Fording " Would like that option !
