Default missing plastic cap...what would you do?

i peeled back my rear diif cover on the rocks yesterday. i had a small puddle of oil in my garage this morning. i have new poison spyder diff covers ready to go on so i changed the cover.

on my gear lube pump hose i keep a little plastic cap to keep it from leaking. when i was picking up my tools i couldn't find the plastic cap.

it may be in my diff.

what would you do?

i think i might leave it in there as i am going to be changing gears soon.

You are not a surgeon are you I would go nuts wondering if it was in there. There is a drain plug, just drain the oil into something so you can re-use it, look in there and put it back together.

i was afraid you would say that.

but since you are here i have a question.

are there small oil passages in the diff? or is it all splash and fling oiling.

if there is a chance i would block an oil passage i would want to pull it right away.

if it got between the gears it would just chew it up like a garbage disposal right?

i just want to drive it to my shop tomorrow so i don't have to pull the cover again in my garage.

i have to say though i can tell now i am going to end up pulling the cover.

It's all "splash and fling", (I like that one), except for the return from above. I believe there is a small clearance where the oil must go through to get back to the bottom. Don't know for sure, though.

Yes, the plastic cap would get chewed up. Probably not too harmful for the gears, but certainly should be avoided.
The small pieces would then be free to migrate into the bearings, which are not as tolerant of foreign objects.
