more performance
hey any thoughts on how I can get some more power out of my jeep, on a basic level I have had a look at ebay for a start and have seen everything from impellers that get installed in your airbox that claim to create a ram air effect thus providing around 10 hp, and also some performance modules that are claiming 70hp , any suggestions??????
Helical bore throttle body spacers and anything on the intake side are going to buy you some very minimal throttle response at best. Not a good investment at all.
A cold air intake, cat back exhaust and headers will give you much more bang for the buck although relatively low increase in performance for the dollars spent.
The biggest bang for the buck is simply replacing the stock air filter with a high flow one such as the one from K&N and replacing the stock can with a more free flowing muffler from Flowmaster or the like.

Don't waste your time and money with headers. It is like putting lipstick on a pig. Gearing is your best bet. Maybe if you had a supercharger headers would be more beneficial. I wish there was a trailjammer type kit that at least would give us 20 or so hp.
I have a set of black satin coated Banks Torque Tube Headers installed on my JK. They reduce under hood temperatures, leading to cooler air through the intake and definitely increase performance throughout the rpm range, especially low end torque. The stock exhaust manifolds I removed had hairline fractures in them which I'm sure quite a few others have as well. This leads to faulty readings on the O2 sensor and likewise decreased performance and efficiency.
While there are certainly other more cost effective ways to secure additional power, nonetheless headers on the JK do increase performance. Also, gears don't increase power they just change the way it is transfered to the ground.

"Power" can be a confusing term. "Horsepower" is often defined as work done over time. Gears don't help that. "Torque" however, is often used to describe power because that's the seat-of-the-pant sensation you get when you step on the gas. Torque is loosely defined as rotational force and can be multiplied by changing gears. So gears really won't affect horsepower, but they will affect torque.
That multiplier effect has an expense. By reducing gears (increasing gear ratio) the engine will rev faster for any given speed. You loose some off your top speed when you gear down.
Do you want to go fast or have more "pop" when you step on the gas? Gears will only give you those two choices.
