A buddy of mine takes his wheels completly off about once every month and a half and waxes them and never drives them in the snow.

If they are new and there isn't any pitting or corrosion yet a Mothers powerball can be your friend. After that, a good coat of wax will help repel the elements. Regular cleaning/waxing is a must on bare aluminum wheels to keep them looking good.

If they are already pitted or corroded, I've found that some 0000 steel wool with some Mothers paste metal polish will help remove it. Then, hit them with the powerball and liquid polish and finish off with a good coat of wax.
