Default Muffler discussion?

I recently heard from a friend running sans muffler would warp my valves?! TRUE or FALSE??

I put a tailpipe on to extend away from the cabin and it sounds/runs fine...figured it was the same as running with an "open flow" style muffler like magnaflow.

Nervously awaiting to see if I need to get that magnaflow put on sooner than later! Thanks guys!

What is a "sans muffler"? If you mean that you took off your muffler and are running "straight pipes" then no, it will not hurt your engine. I can't imagine that it would sound very well, but that again is only a matter of opinion.

Default sans muffler = no muffler

Yeah I just got bored the other day with the sound and figured what the hell? Got the muffler off and it didn't sound half bad compared to some of the sound clips I've heard. Don't get me wrong I'll be adding a magnaflow in the future, but for now it works just fine....just had a scare about the valves! Of course there's always a piece of bad info out there for all the good.

Thanks again guys! Awesome forum

That is an old concern that has been around a long time. Don't know for sure where it originated, but as the story goes the problem is that without a muffler cold air can come up the pipe when the engine is shut down and the cold air on the hot valve will warp it. It is totally false however. I have run countless open pipes on custom Harleys I've built and never had a problem. These are very short compared to a jeep exhaust and the bike engines run much hotter than the jeep so if were ever to be a problem it would have shown long ago.
