Default Need Help - Console Lid Mod

I had a Tahoe before I bought my Jeep and really liked the way the console lid had a tray built in for my phone or whatever I just needed to throw in there.

I got to thinking there has to be a way to build something like this into the Jeep console, obviously on a smaller scale. Cut a hole, trim it out somehow and then line the bottom with the same stuff that lines the bottom of my Craftsman tool chest.

Anyone have any ideas???????????

Might just be easier to attach a tray instead of cutting into the console. It might not look as slick, but would at least then be removable!

Yeah, the cutting part I'm good with....it's the finishing, I'm trying to figure out......maybe something like a shallow black plastic tray/container (maybe tupperware) trimmed out with some sort of rubber seal strip. Just throwin' out ideas....

Well I have been thinking on this same subject. I was more on thinking of making the front of the lid slide out like a drawer then you could slide it out and in.

That's a pretty good idea! As far as materials go think a little bit nicer. Go to a hardwood store and get a piece of wood that's beautiful make a little frame and then cover the edge with some leather using upholstery foam staples and hot glue. You could do all of that with hand tools. just a thought.

That non-slip material your looking for is at walmart in the kitchen drawer section. You can also find it at RV shops, they make placemats out of it for RV's. Kinda a rubbery stuff that things wont slide across.
