There's pretty much no way to press bjs with the shafts in there.

For a skilled tech there is no need to pull the shafts. Like the other guy said the shaft resting on the seal could cause it to leak but that is highly unlikely.

Oh ok. Thanks. I just called the shop that did my ball joints and asked to speak to the manager. I'm waiting for a call back. We will see if they are a stand up shop!if not I will let the forum know where not to go for service.

I don't think it's possible to replace the ball joints and press in new ones with the axle in the way. If it can be done, I'd like to see it. Anyways, the axle would just be hanging there in the housing unsupported which could damage the seal.

Might be a good opportunity to put in a lunchbox since you already have to open it up and pull the diff to replace both axle seals.

When dealing with used parts stuff happens. Some shops will tell you, up front, that what they do may effect something else. The shop has no idea, nor do you, as to the actual condition of the seals before the job began. They could have been right on the end of failure and just the weight of the shaft pushed it over the edge. I'm not saying this is what happened just that you don't really know.

Yeah. That's true. But isn't it the shops responsibility to tell me that this might happen?
