Well, with my 6spd 3:73 & 33's, I can use 6 gear many times on my highway. If I need to climb a mountain pass I drop it to 4th gear. If you are NOT considering going 35's then 4:10's would probably work for you to get the best MPG on 33's.

If you are looking for 4:10 gearing take planman's advice and look for some D44's...

PM Mark Dorion on this JK site, He was running a 6spd, 33's and stock 4:10's and just recently upgraded to 35's and 4:88 gearing. He could give you some go info.

I just did this swap . same stock set up as you and I went with 4.56 , I love it , having said that I now know I could have gotten away with 4.10 and been happy also . I have great hi-way power ( as good as this engine is going to give ) but did give up some mileage in the process , for you i would go with the 4.10 , also remember even with better gearing your still not going to get back all your mpg's , with bigger tires more weight and with lift kit more drag on vehicle

I had a 2 door X with the 29 inch tires and I was finally getting about 20 MPG after I slowed down to 65 MPH on the freeway. I find people have no problem going around me. I do find it awkward when I have to pass someone.

Nope, not drafting. The 22.1 MPG actually came at about 65 MPH. I guess it's my fault I didn't specify at what speed I achieved such awesomeness. But from what I've been reading, i've found that it's not best to rely on the computer, even with stock setups.

Muttsik, thanks for the input. This was very helpful. I realized quickly that all the accessories would drag the MPG down. I was just very shocked to get just over 200 miles to tank of gas! Didn't think it'd be quite that bad. After much research over the past two days, I'm definitely leaning toward the 4.10's. Next question is... what are the specs (i.e. brands, parts and pricing) for the 4.10's that I'm going to need if I don't find some stock Rubi axles first? I have a local shop that I've been going to that will most likely give me a fair deal on the labor.

I have 305-70-17 Goodyear MTRs w kevlar which is a 34, have a 6 spped and I went with 4.88. Could not be happier. If I had a dana 44 I would have considered going with 5.13. Lower gears are AWESOME. Course i live in mountainenous area and wheel a lot.

I can understand the need to regear. I was running 24 mpg on the highway with 3.21s and stock tires. I got 33" duratracs and the jeep still scoots around a bit. When on mountain roads I have to downshift to 5th or even 4th. No big deal. I will be going to 4.56 or 4.88 when I get 35s.

thanks a bunch dirtman. It's good to know that 4.10 will indeed help me out.

i have 3.73's right now. and its not bad at all. my next set of tires will be `37's. And im pretty sure i want to be between 4.88 and 5.13. so if i have to live with a high revving ~35's and 5.13 i think im ok with it. 4.88's would be better for 35's i think in a manual. but because im prety certain i want 37's, so i might as well do 5.13.

I have been in a manual rubi with 5.38's 37's and i liked it.

I luv my 4.10's, they do everything I wanted them too, with 32" tires, but I'm thinking 33's will be darn near perfect with the 4.10's.
Day to day street driving is as good as it gets, figuring mileage vs acceleration, though 4.88's would be quicker, I don't really need that quicknesss, in low range, 1-4th are extremely useable, where with the 3.21's first was about the only gear, and occasionally 2nd that were worth having!

You 4.10's made my jeep do what I want, along with a TrueTrac in the rear axle, and the front still open, I'm having a ball, on and off road.
