Default New diff covers - overfilling & oil question...

Hi everyone,

I bought some Riddler covers and notice the fill plug is quite a bit higher than the stock cover. What are you guys doing to avoid overfilling the diffs?

Also, I'll be putting in 75w140 front & rear (Rubi with Dana 44s front & rear). Anyone see any problem with that? :-)

Thanks,
js.

i have the riddler covers

basically you want to fill them about 2 inches lower then the fill bolt, thats what works for me

i overfilled my front initially and it kept spewing fluid out of the breather hose, 2 inches lower then the fill hole did the trick

And, err, how do you measure that? Just by eye? With a little help from a flashlight maybe? Hmmm... :-)

Well, I don't know for sure how much you should add in a Riddler cover but if you were using a SOLID, you would fill it to about where the fluid just touches your finger tip if you were to stick it in the hole and bend it downward at the middle knuckle. Basically, the breather hose is sitting at about the same level as the fill hole and you want the fluid below that point to prevent it pumping out the breather itself. Of course, if you have your rear axle that is rotated up to accomodate a double cardin drive shaft, you might need to fill it all the way up to the fill hole

I saw where Hilti has this really neat laser "tape" measure. You've really gotta check it out, does square footage, volume... Anyhow get one of those small dental mirrors, place it in the fill hole, then aim that cool Hilti (did I mention it was pretty high dollar?)...

Seriously, just like WOL said, each one of your finger joints is roughly an inch long. Just stick your finger inside to the second knuckle and bend it down. Or you can do it the SDANPA method and overfill and wait for it to empty itself. At least I only did that on the front diff.

Ahhh, I love the smell of 90W in the morning.

I believe the manual has the exact amounts to be put in. I put in extra originally but it comes out (as one noted).

the manual would not apply in this case

the riddler cover is "fatter", more capacity, it lets you put more oil in to the factory level,

I checked the manual, but couldn't find volume info for the diffs. Riddler said to add an extra 4-6 oz, but that doesn't help unless I know the original volume. :-)
