Default New gear problem..your thoughts....

Greetings everyone. About a month and a half ago I had added 35" bfg km 2's, a 2.5" lift, superchip, and had 5.13 gears installed on my 2008 JK auto. The dealer said the break in period is 500 miles. I rarely used the jeep except on weekends so it was going to take awhile to reach 500 miles. Anyway, coming home two days ago while driving on the highway I hear what sounds like a rubbing noise. I pull over, no sign of rubbing, no smell, nothing. I continue on and anything over 30 mph and the noise came back. Fearing I'd make it worse, I drove home slowly and had the Jeep towed to the place I got the work done yesterday. I was about 350 miles into the break in period.

They called today and said the gears were wearing wrong. They said they can't find a set of 5.13 gears in the country (there's a gear shortage?) so they will be installing 5.38 gears and it'll be ready on Friday at NO cost to me. Sounds good. My question is, when I do get to drive the Jeep, it is mostly highway miles. Do I really need to travel under or around 50 mph for the first 500 miles to ensure this doesn't happen again? Also, (if you can't tell I'm not the most mechanically inclined person) what difference, if any, will I notice with the 5.38 gears versus the ones they just took out? Thank you guys for your help.

check the gearing chart that is around here.

you'll be fine as long as you don't tow very much.

i might add that you shouldlook into an after market tranny cooler.

We have over 250 Rear D44 513 JK's Gears in stock there is no shortage.

The dealer said the break in period is 500 miles
That is correct .

Bad setup or a bad gear.

Sounds like they are a stand up company doing the right thing.

You want to avoid long heat cycles with your new gears so if you are traveling at 50MPH for 2 hours you are creating heat and that is not good for the gear.

I tell my customer s to do short trips for the first 100 miles 10-20 min of driving and let it cool. Then after 100 miles drive it easy varying speed from time to time. At 500miles change the gear oil . All should be good.

David,

Thank you for the post, and information regarding the break in period. The company has been great to deal with and installing the gears at no charge is nice. I'll be thinking Northridge for my next purchase however since you provided a response to my post. Thanks again.
