Default New wheels....New questions....

Hello Everyone,

I have decided to get some new wheels and tires for the Jeep. I am sticking with the stock size (225/75/16.....Thats right, 29's...Don't laugh) I would go bigger but I just cant justify it. I only wheel on mild trails and some beaches every now and then. It does the job just fine with the stock rental car street tires so I can only imagine what it will do with the new set. I plan on getting some black D windows and BFG mud terrains. I started to think about the spare on the tailgate. The new wheels have 4.5" backspacing and the tires will be no wider than stock. Will the spare still rest against my bumpstops? Will there be any problems with that set-up? Also, are there any tips on selling the stock wheels and tires? I'd like to have a little extra money to shell out on the BFG's. I apologize if thats a stupid question. This is my first Jeep so I'm still learning the ropes.
Thanks,
-Aaron-

No, the spare will not rest against the bump stops but daystar makes replacements that you trim to fit the length you need. Check around but I got mine from quadratec for about $15.
Maybe you will get lucky trying to sell the stocks but I would not count on it.
I know its your jeep but I would go up to a 265/75/16 which is basically a 32x10. it will actually be a little less than 32. I'm only telling you this because it is your first jeep and you are learning. I do commend you on the BFG choice though. Are you talking about the KM2's or the original KM mud terrains?

I figured I would need to buy new bumpstops. Thats no big deal though. As far as sizing goes, I have no problem with the 32's. In fact, I think it would make the jeep look better. I was just worried about everything else. Mainly the transmission. I know the axles can handle the load, but I don't know anything about the automatic transmission. Will I need to reflash the computer for new shift points if I get bigger tires? I definately don't want to compromise the integrity of my transmission. By the way, its an 2008 2dr X with 3:73 gears and auto trans.
Thanks for the quick responses guys!

You would probably need a flash for the speedo, not sure about the shift points. Since the JK comes with 32's on the upgraded X and Sahara I think your auto tranny will be fine.

Cool! I know the dealer should have no problem flashing the speedo. I didn't know that the Sahara came with 32's. I'm less concerned about the tranny knowing that. Thanks Doc!

aaron if you are in it for mostly looks and a couple trail rides don't wonder into the show and tell section unless you wanna just get 35's. lol but i had the stocker 28.5"s and thought they were good all around too. if you are getting new wheels and tires just go with 32's. they will look and perform great for you. congratulations on your first jeep sir! and welcome. i too have a 2dr X however an 07 with 4.10 your transmission will be fine, no problems there. the only issues will be your bump stops, which is no big deal at all. remember to wave!

I would at least go to 32's. And if you wana know what they would look like, I have them on mine.

I didn't flash my computer yet, but it doesn't effect anything other then the odometer. Your mph will be off by 2.

This pic is after a 2.5in lift, but if you want to see before the lift, there is more pics in my gallery. You don't need a lift for the size tire, I just wanted it for clearance.

Alright guys, I've decided on 265/75/R16 BFG Mud Terrains KM for my tires. I'm still gonna go with the D Windows with 4.5" backspacing too. Should I get a wider wheel for the new tires? Will the stock width (7"?) be ok? Thanks for the pictures and all the help. I appreciate it very much.

7" will be fine with a 265/75/16. 1 word of caution about the BFG KM's if you are talking about the old tread design (same as on the rubi), they no longer produce that tire. So if you are looking at buying locally from someone that says they can get them be careful. The tires could be old or if you damage one you might have a hard time replacing the tire.
