Default Newb axle question.

Can I bolt up the hubs of a Dana 44 front axle with out the shafts? I'm doing a rebuild and plan on dropping it off. I only need to roll the housing to the shop. So can I put on the knuckles, hubs and wheels on with out shafts or drive shafts and still be able to roll it 20 miles?

Sure you can. The axles are independent of the hub. The hub is held on by a large nut and if you remove the nut and the axle, the hub can remain.

The unit bearing is "self-retaining".

Look at this thread to see how it is made, and why it doesn't need the stub and nut as in the past.
