Newbie in many ways
first and foremost, get youself tow hooks front and rear if you don't have them already as well as some basic recovery gear like a tow strap and air compressor. then, go out and have some fun. the more you play, the more you will know what you want/need
Most people are going to sat good recover gear....tow hook, straps, hi-jack, and maybe a winch.....All depends on what you use your Jeep for! If its a daily diver, nothing wrong with making it look alittle better first, new wheels/tires and some little things....
I got a 2-door X and I started with Silverstar headlights, K&N Filter, Husky Floor Liner and a trailer hitch....Then I bought a lift and working on wheels/tires now! The trailer hitch acts as recover point for the rear, dont have anything up front yet....

x2 always have good recovery gear, if you dont have the funds for a winch, get a high-lift!
Congrats and Welcome to the forum, like it has been said before good recovery gear then go out and have fun learning what your jeep is capable of; once you learn the weak spots of your jeep that would a good place to start the mods. Good luck

My first order of business after getting my jeep was to clean up the intake and exhaust side of things as it is a daily driver and I commute over 500 miles weekly. Whatever efficiency I could buy out of the gate and within the first week I installed a CAI, Headers, Cat Back Exhaust and Hypertech programmer. I get gas mileage that sounds like a fish story so I won't even repeat it.
What followed was the lift, wheels tires and bumpers when I had my first opportunity for a vacation and to hit something more than the pavement. That along with what others have mentioned and I felt pretty good to go despite still having some unfulfilled items on my wish list.
One last thing is a fire extinguisher. A stock jeep rolling around with stock steelies, stock wheels, the top down and a fire extinguisher strapped on the roll bar will get the nod of other enthusiasts, while providing an important safety feature in any vehicle.

Do you have the money for wheels and tires? If not I would strt with the 1.5" wheel spacers. It gets the tires out more on the corners for more stability and it makes it look so much better than it does with them tucked way back hidden in the big old fenders. Also you will then have the needed back spacing for larger tires when you can afford them and then the lift. I know some may think this as one of your first mods as strange but I did this while waiting on the Lift and track bars to show. I made it look so much better for a poor mans mod. And when you finally can get new wheels there is always another new guy that will take them off of your hands while he is slowly building it. Many on here will also say, wheel it like it is and make the decisions on the rout you want to take, you may only be a sand guy, you may be rock only or you may be mud, many different combos that go different ways, and will keep more money in your pockets. And ASK, ASK,ASK questions on here before you do if you don't have any friends with more Jeep knowledge than you may have right now, thus the reason we are here, and the vendors that support the site are really awesome bunch of guys, good luck, and keep in mind we are a visual bunch so if you do mod and get on here and brag about it you better have pics!!! LOL Have fun, welcome and congrats!
Im surprised no one has said skid plates.
You have to help protect your underside from the critical damage that would prevent you from driving home. Sure recovery gear is a little bit of a given but you aren't really supposed to go wheeling alone so you have a buddy to help save you too.
And even if you do have recovery gear or a friend with you. What are you gonna do when you've punctured your belly pan, or diff cover in the middle of the woods? No fancy pants CAI, exhaust, performance mod will help get you home then.
