A D ring and a bow shackle are two different things. What we commonly refer to as a D ring is actually a bow shackle. A D ring looks like a D.

D-rings are typically not removable or are bolted to the tow surface and shaped like a D.

There are D rings that are made like bow shackles so they are removable. But you are right. What most people call and ring is actually a bow shackle.

The three part one in your pic is the safest type and a rigging industry standard. You can use it with a removable R clip for recovery use instead of a Kotter pin.

When I say a regular D ring I mean a 2 piece shackle not a 3 piece with a cotter pin. Everyone knows shackles as D rings.
