Default Non-Mechanic needs help.

Before anyone tells me to sell and buy a 4WD, i gotta say that i am not going that route. I bought a 2WD Unlimited for $15000 (with very low miles) and it will be cheaper to upgrade to 4WD, than to trade in and buy new. What i need to know is what exactly do I need to make the conversion. I see that MOPAR is selling axles now and I am wondering if they come with everthing that i will need. I have read some other threads on here about needing transfer case, diff. cover, etc, but i do not know what any of that is and if the axles from Mopar come complete with all that stuff. I will not be doing the work, but will be helping my brother and want to make sure i have everything before calling him to come down and get me trail ready. thanks in advance for all the help.

You might want to look for a wrecked JK to strip or take parts off of the 2WD to repair the 4WD wreck.
i think your way off on this, i think he can get it done for under what he would lose trading it in, and buying a 4x4..

to the OP, check out daveysjeeps.com

he's a jeep salavage yard. I know he has a rubicon transfercase for $1,200. I would bet you can buy the linkages from him too,

then all you need is front and rear drivesafts and the front axle of course. shafts can be found on here cheap, Even a front axle can be picked up at a decent price. D30's will be cheaper.

Got to go with the cop here. Buy used off here or salvage yard will be the best way may take a few months to find.....you are still talking around 5K.

Drive shafts buy here, I assume you are not lifting at this time. Front axle assembly, try to find a D44, here from a guy "upgrading" to a 60 or even 4wd.com. Don't forget you have to match gear ratio to your rearend. You can even find used 4.10 ring and pinions here really cheap.

Transfer case a salvage yard is your best bet if you find one i'm sure they will let the shifter linkage go with it. or go high dollar and by an atlas (comes with linkage).

Piginajeep has noted what you would still need...and even a price on the most expensive remaining component...as long as you are willing to go used/salvaged....that being the transfer case.

Factory drive shafts...many forum members lifting their Jeep sell their slightly used, but still fully functioning front/rear drive shafts for cheap...many times for $50 a shaft or so...some less, some more depending on the miles on the shaft before being replaced...or again, you can probably pick up salvaged with the place Piginajeep noted.

And as toymaster noted...if you buy the axle you linked...you will need to match the 4.10 gear ratio in the rear...so you will possibly have a gear swap needed for your rear axle.

There have been Dana 30s go here in the freebie section. Hell, you'd be money ahead STILL if you paid somebody to stick it on a pallet and ship it to you. I would suspect if you pinch your pennies and find deals you might could get out for 5K or less.

If you bought that, you'll still need to invest a good 3000-3500 for t-case, and drive shafts, and other small things I can't think of right now...but that's bare min. That'll get you functional....it's up to you if you really want a new console to accomodate the T-case shifter, or if you want the dash to read out that your in 4wd, and god knows about ESP compatibility....if you don't care about that, no problem

Thanks for the direction guys. I have very limited knowledge on most of the stuff you are talking about, but it gives me a start towards what I need to learn. My brother will be doing the install, and providing my education. I have found a salvage yard with complete front Dana 44 with 4:10 gears (i do have these currently on the back) for $1250. I guess that will be the starting point.

thanks for advice and I am still interested in any other support.

Is it a D44 for a JK. Or out of something else. If its not for the JK you'll need all the link brackets, etc. and have to have them welded on as well.

And starting point is the key phrase in that sentence...
