Default NOOB Question on Gearing

noob question here. i am planning on a larger tire set up and lift. the pocket book just doesn't warrant everything @ once. is there any disadvantage to gearing to 5.13's on stock rims/rubber? again, one or the other, i can't afford to all the upgrades/mods @ once. i'm thinking of keeping the stock rim as i like the looks of it, and putting on 33's, then later on a 2.5" RC BB.

Stock '08 JKL Sahara
18" stock rims
6 spd
this is also my DD

so i'm looking for the best set up keeping my stock 18" rims, with 33"s in the near future and keeping in mind that MPG is also a concern. (understanding the weight addition w/33" meats)

thanks again for your replies and insight! luv this forum and knowing i can lean on fellow JK'ers for advice!

I just got my JK unlimited and it's got the stock 3.21. I don't plan on going more then 35's but don't want to under gear. How hard of an install is it? I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have done clutches and turbokits on newer VW's. I've never had a 4x4 or a RWD vehicle even in the last 15 years. Any suggestions on where to get the kit for best pricing as well?

What gearing do you presently have?
Normally stock gearing is installed for the benifit of fuel miliage, and in my opinion is a bit lacking when it comes to power/torque in a factory set-up.
With that said. We have an 07 JK "X" 4dr, auto with the 245/75/16's, which are just a tad over 30" and 4.10 gears. I believe this to be a great combination as far as the factory set-up goes. It provides enough power for the JK, even after adding an AEV front bumper, to hit the highway and pass if need be, has a nice power curve for minor offroading, yet still allows for fair MPG's.
I dont think I'd be happy with anythin less than the 4.10's in my application.

Since your stock rims are 18's, most likely your tires are a bit over 32". I would believe 5.13's to be a bit low, without going to at least 35" tires. 5.13's would provide you with alot of low end torque, however if this is a DD, you would be running a very high RPM at say 55MPH, not only lowering your MPG considerably, but also putting quite a bit of stress on the engine.

thanks for the infoKJRubiconWannaBe! i currently have stock 3.21's but also don't plan on 35's, 33's are enough for me (for now!). thanks again for the insight!

i'm bone stock, 3.21. i agree with your statement as i feel it's lacking in power/torque as well and would prefer something more snappy, but mine is 6spd not auto. i didn't get the factory tow package w/the 4.10 gears, but in hindsight i should have as this is not a mod that came in my head @ the time. correct, tires are 32's and yes this is also a DD so i don't think that 5.13 will work in my application. i guess i should have given more info on my original question. thanks for your insight!
