Question offset vs backspacing

I have gotten different answers on this question
I am looking at a 17x9 rim, it is offered in 2 different offsets
I know what backspacing and offset is, but not sure how they relate, and as I said I am getting different answers
OK that said the choices are: -12 offset and -25 offset
I was told that the -12 is 4.5 bs, but -25 I am getting everything from 5.5-4 bs
I think the 4 bs is correct, but just want to be sure.

also would you go with 4.5 or 4 bs with 35's? pros and cons?

To convert offset to backspacing (assuming negative offset )
(Wheel Width +1)/2 - (offset * .03937)

-12mm offset = (9 + 1) / 2 - (12 * .03937) = 4.5" backspacing (rounded slightly)

-25mm offset = (9 + 1) / 2 - (25 * .03937) = 4" backspacing (rounded slightlY)

Thank you, the 4" made more sense than the 5.5", just double checking myself
