Oil & Engine skid options - Auto Rubi
I used the Rancho "helmet" style on the oil pan and its worked just fine as insurance. Have yet to see a scrape on it, but people that have hit it, said it held up great. Just make sure to put on the safety wire and clean it with simple green before you aply the RTV. No other feedback as I'm rocking stock skids under everything else.
I've got the Rockhard on my Jeep and it's very robust. I really like the fact that the front supports mount to the motor mounts instead if the oil pan like some of the other skids. With that design no force is transferred to the motor if you take a big hit.
Not sure what you heard from someone about RockHard but if you can break it your jumping off the grand canyon on to some gnarly rocks lol, and it's Freaking HUGE. Much biger than the rest of the companies JS. Go to their web site and look for yourself
I was one of the few that did not like the pro tec when it came out. The thought of direct impact transferring directly to the oil pan and therefore the engine just seemed wrong. Yes it should save your oil pan but what else is it doing. I'm sure they are great and lots of people love them but they are not for me. The motor mount style is my choice because I had rather bend one of those arms, if possible, than have that force up through the drive train. Those arms are replaceable. Just my two cents.
I just ordered the Rock Hard Skid Plate and I'll let you guys know what I think.
The more I thought about it, the more I preferred the sliding / gliding action this plate allows compared to the helmet style on the EVO.I also liked the idea that it would be pretty easy to replace the engine mount brackets if they are bent (or I could just pound them back out again) - allowing for some flex without directly putting impact stress on the engine block / oil pan bolt area.

Agreed that whoever told you the Rockhard were weak was talking out of their third point of contract...they are beefy.
Truth be told, all the skid plates are about the same thickness, but the ones that bolt directly to the engine do not give the extra protection of standoff...think of that trick we pulled when we were younger where you get someone to put their hand on their face then hit their hand... still hurt them, right?
