Opinions on Kargo Master Congo Rack
SubscribeHi all
I'm new to this forum and also a new JK owner. I got my 08 Unlimited Sahara from the dealer today. Yes, that's right, today! Do you think I'm happy?
Well, the first mod I have to do is to get a roof rack, because I transport a lot of construction material. I'm leaning towards the Congo Cage since it's not too expensive and seems sturdy and good looking. I've read the 10-page thread about it here and understand that some people had a great deal of trouble installing it.
Well, it's been a few months since then, so, now I'd like to know if the cage's improved. So, if you fellows have installed the cage lately I'd really like to have your opinion on how tricky or not-tricky it was.
Best Regards

The rack is fairly sturdy, but I think Kargo Master pushed it onto the market before it was ready. I've had issues with the fit. They've already sent me one replacement part and another is on the way. I have had good customer service from Kargo Master. Here's what's good about it: It mounts without having to drill anywhere on the Jeep, It's rated for 500 lbs, At about $500 shipped (in the US), it's the best deal out there. Here's what sucks: still have fit issues, it's alot more difficult to install than it should be (bad fit), it will drop your gas milage by 2-3 miles a gallon, the wind noise is bad, and even though it tilts back for you to access the soft top, it's a pain in the ass. You have to unscrew the 2 bolts on the front mount, lift it (it's heavy), and mount it on the prop rods while you put the top back. Then slowly lower it, and rescrew the bolts.
As far as hauling construction material, it's probably your best rack option unless you want to get a trailer.

Welcome to the club! Sounds like you're like me; should have bought a pickup but couldn't resist the Jeep. I have a Warrior rack. It is a beast. It feels like a mini roll bar. It did require drilling into the body but if you're hauling heavy materials, you might want to consider it. On the flip side, it's not easy to remove. (It says it is but if I unhook it, I don't think I will be able to get it back together) Also, the angle of the rear support rails are not consistent with the angle of the roll bar in the back so it looks a little weird with the top off. Wild Boar makes one with the corrrect angles. I don't know if it's good quality though so maybe some of the SoCal guys can chime in...
Make sure you get some heavy duty steps too. Climbing up there to get materials isn't as easy as reaching into the back of a pickup truck. Maybe a trailer would be better for your needs.
