Default Oversized Tire Carrier by Smittybilt

Has anybody used this? Would this be a cheap alternative to the more expensive tire carriers? It says it eliminates tailgate sag.

It attaches to the factory holes, and still leaves all the weight on the factory hinges.

It'll probably let you fit whatever tire you want on there...but I'd wager that you'll still have exactly the same long-term problems with hinges and sheet metal as you would if you put a big tire on the factory carrier.

It has been around for a few years, but i havn't seen anyone on this forum use one.
More popular alternatives are the OR-FAB carrier, or MBRP reinforcement brackets and carrier.

I have one with a 35 on it. My gate seems to be fine so far, but I'll be upgrading to a full bumper/tire carrier early next year.

I would do the MBRP if you're going to run an upsize tire on anything other than a complete carrier assembly for any length of time. Sure, you might be okay without doing it...but once you start to damage that sheet metal, it's a one-way street!

I thought the same thing ref the tailgate sag. It does say "adjustable arms" what Im thinking, is that you probably lengthen the arms to "rest" on whatever bumper you have.

I just think the advertisment wording needs to give a better description

Yes...but if it uses the original mounting holes, you may still have some sheet metal issues.

Ah I see what your saying. The downward pressure may be taken care of by the adj. arms, but the "outward" pressure would still be pulling on the tailgate.

Good point...

Bamn! Heavy duty bumper and tire carrier is still on the list.

If the carrier mounts on the tailgate side of the hinges, the weight is still on the tailgate. What kinda design is it that the "arms" would rest on the bumper and scratch it all to hell? Sounds kinda stupid. A bigger picture might help. I can't see a damn thing.

MBRP does make a kit to beef up the mounting points for the stock carrier when used for a heavier tire/wheel combo. That might do the job.
