Seem like u just got rob, can I rob u? I got my superior gear install not too long ago, it a 4:88 for front and back, the gear u can get it your self online, sometime it come with a packge for the gear and new fitting for about $300-350, the gear and pinion cost for $189- 206
The labor install should charge u about $376, depend what shop u go too they may
overcharge u. I had an arb air locker install and new differential cover- rancho, and a skid plate,4 bird in one stone, and the price came to $406, what out for shady mechanic which they f-up my seal for the axle and had to replace it end up for another $120 dollar, taking the same part out... the mechanic should know that to heat your gear to fit it, or he just trying to get u a different that may be more expensive. all new gear and ratio it about the same price, should got one higher than a 4:56..

4.56s are more expensive, plus i got the rebuild kit since I have 90,000 miles on my jeep. the old bearings were shit, i saw them. also needed a new carrier for the front, thats another 92 bucks. i shopped around and thats about the best i could do, plus quadratec is minutes from where i'm at so shipping was quick and i knew i could take things back if i needed to. I'll disagree about the 4.88's, i'm already at 2900 rpms at 70mph, thats too much. I live at sea level man, not many hills. Plus I have a manual, and can always drop a gear when pulling the boat. I think i'm happy with my decisions. and i'm surprised you'd find a place to do it for $376, that's ridiculously cheap. Most people from what i read spend anywhere from 1200-2200 for gears. I'm at $1500, so I'm happy enough.

I would like to know, however, what gears your mechanic would have used that would have been different from what you used. As WOL pointed out, just about every gear for the JK is made overseas. If he decided to go with Yukon...overseas....G2...overseas... I think there is one compnay making them here in the U.S. but not sure what ratios they come in. Frankly, I don't know anyone running aftermarket gears that don't fall into one of the 3 mentioned.

Im not sure. I can call and ask.

You have an automatic...way different than a manual, which is what the OP has. I have a manual and have 4.88s, but, I'm running 37s. It is perfect, plenty of power and I can still tow with no problem. Pulls about 2700rpms at 70mph in 6th.

I talked to Dave who gets the gears for my mechanic usually, and he said he usually gets them from Alloy, Liberty or Motive. I don't know anymore than that.
