Default pinion seal replacement

Anybody have a write-up for changing the front pinion seal? Mine's leaking a little and I figured I'd go ahead and replace it when I change my front driveshaft and yoke. I assume removing the flange/yoke is the hard part, but I thought anybody who's done it before might have a tip or 2.

2K1TJ - Mine was leaking a little and I took it to the Dealer to have it fixed under warrantee.

Once you pull that hit the big nut on the pinion flange with the impact to take it off.

you'll trash the old seal getting it out, so don't stress about that. i usually use a screwdrive and a hammer to get it out. not on the lip (don't want to gall up the housing) but kind of hit it so it spins. when you do that it generally unseats and gets "crooked" and you can either pry it out or grab it with a set of channel locks.

the new one pretty much slides on and you tap it in LIGHTLY!!!!

reinstall your flange. i hit it with an impact but i dont go nuts on it. i take it till it stops. You don't want to change the pinion depth (pretty sure they have a crush sleeve).

then reinstall the PITA driveshaft.

you're done.

careful you don't let the driveshaft flange fall apart when you take it off.

Thanks. I figured that's about all there was to it. I already have the front shaft out waiting to install my JE Reel, so I guess I'm half way there.

I've had it regeared, so I figured they wouldn't warranty the seal. That's why I didn't take it to the dealer. I hate dealing w/ them anyway unless it's absolutely necessary

2K1TJ - I agree with you, but wanted to see if/how the warrantee works. I brought it there to have it fixed, but it turns out that by the time I got around to binging it to them it had stopped leaking. They put it on the lift and didn’t see the leak. They called me out and I showed them where it had been leaking, but it looked like it stopped. They offered to pull the driveshaft and look at the pinion nut. When they took the driveshaft off there was some small amount of surface oil inside the flange. They said sometimes oil from the assembly can leak out, and they thought that was the case with my seal. They did offer to take the nut off and continue working on it, but I told them to just bolt the driveshaft back on and I would watch it. The tech said the warrantee usually covers the seal if is dripping, not just “moist”, but if I ever wanted to have it replaced I could bring it back and they would fix it under warrantee.

When you install the new seal I believe there is a range of recommended torque setting for the pinion nut (160-200 ft. lbs.) depending on the torque required to turn the nut before removal.
