I believe the upper ball joint is designed to allow a little vertical movement. If there was side to side play in the upper joint I would be concerned. Although, the lower joint should have no more than 1.25mm vertical movement.

Correct. Check the lower for vertical movement. Upper is lateral movement. Some play is acceptable. I forget the exact amount that is acceptable, but you can find it via Google pretty easy.

And you've greased them regularly (at oil change, etc.)?
