Powerplant vs Vair
I'm thinking about jumping aboard the Powerplant bandwagon - but I really like Vair's setup as well. Any comments on how well the Powerplant does with an aux tank setup? What kind of duty cycle does it run?
I'm just getting into this too so I have a few questions. Why would you need a tank with the powerplant? I thought it had a great duty cycle.
I have the Viair constant duty air kit on mine.. It's not as fast as the powerplant, but does the job well, plus I saved about $300 bucks with the air kit and a winch VS. the powerplant.
That's precisely what I'm asking - I didn't see the duty cycle in print, so I wasn't sure how good it was vs a 450C Vair constant duty.
David @ Northbridge4x4 told me that they were going to offer the WARN DC-POWERED AIR COMPRESSORS but I haven't seen them on the site yet.
shucks...i lost myself...somebody help.
I seen a power plant in action and decided I wanted one. I want to mount it in a bumper that sits it down in between the frame so not to block the radiator. Here is a link to a comparison test of portable compressors: parksoffroad.com/prodreview/inflatortest/inflatormain.htm Here is information from Warn and Viair websites:
powerplant: 12 cfm @ 0 psi/5 cfm @ 0 psi/ max press 100psi/ weight 100lbs(a standard xp9.5 87lbs)
viair 550 $299: 2.93 cfm @ 0 psi/ 1.7 cfm @ 90 psi/ max press 150psi/ weight 19lbs
viair 400p $199: 2.54 cfm @ 0 psi/ 1.41 cfm @ 90 psi/ max press 150psi/ weight 8.5lbs
The powerplant has a built-in 1/2 gallon tank, so no need for extra mounting and wiring.
the powerplant will air up 4-35" tires from 8 to 35psi in 8 minutes
the viair 400p will only air up 1-32" tire from 10 to 35psi in 3mins 17 secs
I talked to a Warn rep. and he said the only difference between having an extra tank and not is the amount the compressor kicks on and off.
Just a bunch a food for thought.

I have been weighing the whole cost, weight, wiring, mounting & performance since I was pulled out by one, then I watched him air his tires up. I have found the powerplant for about $1260: a Warn winch is about $800-$1100 and any compressor that puts out the same pressure is at least $500 and I don't want to go the whole kilby on board air system. So I have decided to go with the Keep It Simple Stupid approach, less wiring, less mounting(more room for other stuff), less money, good performance.
