If you want a programmer, the ProCal is it.
If you want a tuner, your best bet is to just do a quick search for the numerous threads. There is a lot of info about the various tunes, both positive and negative, so look for reviews from people with your specific setup and in your specific location.
I have both the ProCal and the Flashpaq. For my auto here at altitude, the flashpaq 87 tune is no different than the calibration from the procal. The 91 tune is a bit worse. The Tow tune with 91octane is very good, with much improved shift points.

Are the tuners able to push custom written maps / tunes?

There's one that several folks, myself included, installed and have been enjoying. It's the Bully Dog.
The great thing about it is that it is also a real time display that you can mount to your dashboard. It can display many parameters, four at a time and you can choose which and how to display. There's at least one thread going on about it.
Price is about the same as SC.

a guy I know says w/ the aev you just pop it on & it calibrates everything instantly. my experience w/ the SC is you have to wait a few minutes for it to install the new program, but again the aev is only recalibrating for wheel size & whatever else it does whereas the SC is a full computer tune. I like the SC so far, have def. seen better gas mileage. I've got friend that say the throttle response is much better w/ their automatics running the SC (I have the 6spd)
